Installation Methods

Vanity mirror set in J-channel in SE Portland

J-Channel Mirror Installation

Our standard method of installing a mirror is to set it in J-channel. The channel supports the weight of the glass while the mirror mastic keeps it tight to the wall.

J-channel comes in various colors to match your fixtures, or choose bright chrome to match the reflective qualities of the mirror itself.

Solid BaCksplash Installation

A backsplash made of a sturdy stone like marble and granite can act as the support for a wall mirror, instead of using J-channel. Mirror mastic secures it to the wall. Thin spacers sit between the stone and the mirror as padding.

Wall Frame Mirror Installation

Create wood framed bathroom mirrors that don’t just look beautiful, but provide support for a large mirror. The wood trim in this bathroom was secured to the wall, then we took detailed measurements and filled the space with mirror. Full length wall mirrors can be decorative mirrors too.

Floating Mirror Installation

Do you love the “floating mirror” look? So do we…as long as the installation is safe and secure. Behind the buttons in the four corners of the mirror are mounting screws to keep everything in place. For a more dramatic look, install plywood or other sturdy material behind the mirror to bring the mirror out away from the wall.

Mirror damaged caused by setting the mirror on the counter top.

Caution!

Setting a mirror directly on the counter in a wet environment is not recommended. Everyday use leads to water sitting on the counter and reaching the edge of the mirror. That moisture will wick up the back of the mirror and slowly eat away at the mirroring. Mounting a mirror up above the “splash zone” will help save it from damage.

Common Mirror Design Selections

Small bathroom vanity mirror.

Keeping it Simple. The mirror is brought in from the wall, stays under the light fixture and avoids the outlet.

Wide mirror with outlet cutout.

Full Width. The mirror runs the entire width of the vanity. It lines up with the left wall and has a cutout and mirrored plate cover for the outlet.

Full length mirror full width of counter and up to ceiling.

Filling the Space. A hole can be cut out to install the light fixture through the mirror. Choose a height just above the light, or all the way to the ceiling.

HOW TO PURCHASE A CUSTOM CUT BATHROOM MIRROR

  1. Use 1/4” thick mirror when attaching directly to the wall. Thinner mirror can bend, creating a fun house look. 1/4” mirror will straighten itself and create a consistent look no matter where it’s placed. Thinner mirror can be used when it’s attached to solid and straight base material like cabinet doors.

  2. Identify bumps and bows where your mirror will be installed. Backsplashes, walls, or ceilings don’t need to be level or plumb, but they do need to be straight. If a wall has a curve, belly, or other inconsistency, the mirror will draw attention to the problem. In these cases, consider bringing the mirror away from the wall an inch or two so the problem won’t be as noticeable. Also note how flat the face of the wall is. Quality 1/4” mirrors will not bend to the shape of the wall, so low areas will create gaps. These gaps could be noticeable if they’re at the edge of the mirror, or if the backsplash was set to follow a bow but the mirror is straight.

  3. Consider size limitations in your design. There might be room on the wall to install a huge wall-to-wall mirror and bring it all the way to the ceiling, but can that mirror be carried through the house to it’s install location? The size of your mirror might be limited because of the size of the landing on the stairs, or the maximum length that can turn from the hall into the bathroom.

  4. Choose safety and security over aesthetics. Thin or small mirrors can be hung with mounting brackets attached to the back, or glued directly to the wall, but larger mirrors need more support. Large high quality 1/4” mirrors are heavy and need secure mechanical attachment to the wall to support the weight. It’s not a good trade-off to sacrifice safety for looks.

  5. Hire a professional like DT Glass for full service consult, measure, and installation in the Portland area. This is important if your mirror is going to be large, have cutouts, or run along the wall or ceiling. For smaller mirrors with no cutouts or out of level conditions, you could call us with your sizes and pick up from our shop in Oregon City for extra savings. We can provide you with J-channel and mirror mastic too.

Choose a shaped bevel mirror such as this oval mirror with beveled edge. Or maybe you’d prefer a round mirror, or arch mirror. Shaped mirrors add interest in small spaces like the powder room.
